A drop of water, a grain of salt…

At the EXPO Zaragoza 2008 Croatia welcomes you with an imaginative story of a drop of water and a grain of salt!

Though simple and all-present, salt and water are essential and precious. Salt is an integral part of every drop of sea water. It takes a lot of sun, wind and hard work to separate hard crystals of salt from the smooth texture of the sea. This process has been used for centuries and it is still used on the Croatian Adriatic. It is not only a clean and natural method of salt production; it is rather a part of the natural cycle, perfect example of nature’s wisdom. The motif of traditional saltpans is therefore chosen as a Croatian contribution to the theme Water and sustainable development.

Croatian Pavilion…

Your journey through the pavilion begins in the entrance hall where dim lighting leaves you with the impression of walking through the depths of the sea, while mirrored walls simulate its infiniteness. In a relaxed atmosphere you are set for a voyage under, through and above the sea surface.

Passing through the doors at the end of the corridor you find yourself closer to the surface, but still underneath; brighter lights and sound of sea waves announce the approach to the surface. Look for the shadows of the underwater while ascending… Once on the upper floor, the lights change revealing the sea surface as a salt field and the flight above Croatia begins. The saltpans that you walked through before become your window to Croatia.

After the journey through the sea, you enter an oasis of water and nature. Sit and relax under the shadow of a tree, take a sip of Jana Mineral Water and watch the changes that appear on the floor of this unique lounge.
