"THE SEA"

"The Sea", Book by Damir Fabijanić

The book you have before you is part of the project for the Croatian participation at the World Exposition EXPO 2008 in Zaragoza. The concept A drop of Water, a Grain of Salt is Croatia's answer to theme of this year’s EXPO Water and Sustainable Development. However, this book is not merely material to supplement the participation of Croatia at this event; the photographs in it are both inspiration and origin of the Croatian Pavilion itself. As the sea is an inexhaustible source of inspiration, the Croatian Adriatic has always been a major motif for the country’s artists; thus the authors of this project found the inspiration for it in the photographs by one of them – Damir Fabijanić.

This project presented Croatia for the first time at the 2005 World Exposition in Aichi, Japan. The imaginative tale of a drop of water and a grain of salt started with the projection of these very photographs. Fascinating and sometimes abstract, they would provide answers to some, but raise even more questions; for the visitors, they were the first window into a distant and unknown country.

For Zaragoza, the concept remains the same, while the space and the appearance change. The visitors now meet the photographs of Damir Fabijanić through this book, which is offered at the exit from the pavilion. However, with this book, the exit from the pavilion does not mean the end of the experience; the book remains a lasting memorial of the project that has introduced Croatia to thousands of people.

In Zaragoza, Croatia once again presents itself with the powerful motif of the Adriatic, a practice that was started at the World Exposition in Lisbon in 1998. The photographs in this book show in the best possible way how important and strong this motif is for an authentic experience of our country.
