Call for proposals for the architectural concept of Croatian presentation on EXPO 2010
Croatian National Committee for EXPO 2010 announced a multidisciplinary call for proposals for the selection of the artistic concept for the presentation of the Republic of Croatia on the World Exhibition which will take place in Shanghai in 2010.
EXPO in Shanghai will be the largest World Exhibition ever to take place – the Chinese organizer expects between 70 and 100 million visitors during 6 months of the Exhibition. So far the participation has been confirmed by 119 countries, and the expected number is 200. The exhibition will take place on 322 acres on the banks of the river Huangpu in the very center of the 18 million city. For comparison, on the last EXPO in Japan pavilions of 121 countries were visited by 22 million visitors on the exhibition area of 173 acres.
The invitation of the Peoples Republic of China for the participation was accepted by the Government of the Republic of Croatia last year, and therefore, in compliance with the law and previous practice it delegated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration to prepare the Croatian presentation and the National Committee to organize it. The Committee consists of representatives of relevant ministries (Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Environmental Protection, Physical Planning and Construction, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Economy, Labor and Entrepreneurship, Ministry of Science, Education and Sports, Ministry of the Sea, Tourism, Transport and Infrastructure) and MSc Zeljko Kupresak, the State Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, was elected chairman of the Committee. The government also appointed the National Delegate for EXPO 2010, Mr. Ivica Maricic, who had already organized three successful presentations of the Republic of Croatia on World Exhibitions who is also the vice president of BIE, the International Exhibition Bureau located in Paris.
The theme of EXPO 2010 will be Better city, Better life. Upon consultation with experts and members of the Selection Committee elected for the call for proposals, the National Committee of the Republic of Croatia decided that the theme of the work will be City Colors. Since this is a multidisciplinary call for proposals the nine member Selection Committee comprises of experts in different fields some of whom already had experience with World Exhibitions (Jerko Rosin, architect; academic Vladimir Markovic; Ph.D.. Miljenko Domijan; Dalibor Jelavić, academic painter; Nikola Basic, architect; Ph.D. Zeljka Corak; Ph.D. Vesna Girardi Jurkic; Ines Mercep, architect; Ph.D.Ivan Doroghy). The call for proposals was published in the Gazette of Public Tenders on May 21 and it was written in collaboration with the Office for Public Tenders and the State Intellectual Property Office. Deadline for the submission of proposals is September 14 of this year and the best work will be awarded 100.000 kuna. Considering that the year of EXPO 2010 will be the year of the 30th anniversary of friendship between the City of Zagreb and the City of Shanghai, the Chinese suggested that a part of the Croatian exhibition remain as a permanent exhibit in the urban space of Shanghai even after the closing of the World Exhibition. The applicants were also requested to offer a version which would make possible the transformation of the pavilion building after the Exhibition into a building which would accommodate the Croatian Consulate, cultural center, representative office of the Croatian National Tourist Board or a similar institution.
